Eastern Ukraine opens up new opportunities for business cooperation and investment

Kyiv, Sept. 12-13 – The UN Development Programme in Ukraine held a large-scale business conference and exhibition of enterprises from Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, entitled "East-Expo 2017" in Kyiv on September 12-13.

Over the two days, Kyiv residents and visitors to the city attended master classes, participated in open discussions on economic development and innovations, and got to know businesses from the country’s easternmost region. More than 80 companies set up stands to feature their products, which included cheeses, rock salt products, IT technologies, 3-D printers, clay ovens, and eco-friendly products.

“Three years ago, people were fleeing from the Donbas in large numbers, seeking help, refuge and shelter,” said Janthomas Hiemstra, UNDP’s Country Director in Ukraine.

“Today, they have come to Kyiv to proudly present their successful enterprises and offer new business opportunities and cooperation to the whole of Ukraine,” he said.

“Helping small and medium businesses from eastern Ukraine to grow, expand their markets and create jobs for other IDPs will not only help revive the local economy in the Donbas, but will in the long run help foster the economic development of the entire country.”

One of the companies exhibiting at East-Expo 2017, Aeromekh Ltd., from the city of Kreminna, has over 15 years of successful experience in manufacturing and selling its grain separators in 40 countries around the world. Another company called QUART-SOFT presented at the exhibition a web-based mechanism for automating IT-processes in the agro-industrial sector. And Oleksandr-Limited, a company from Slaviansk, in Donetsk Oblast, brought to the exhibition an innovative development – an additive for asphalt road surfaces that increases the water resistance of roads, and thereby their lifetimes.

The last day of the event featured an exciting fashion show highlighting designers from Donetsk Oblast. Tin’ Sontsya, a folk-metal band from Kyiv, provided the musical accompaniment to the show.

During the exhibition, prominent speakers and trainers hosted master classes and panel discussions. The experts included Benedikt Hermann, a policy support expert from the Delegation of the European Union to Ukraine, Vladlen Sysun, an expert on marketing and price competition in small business, and Dmitry Sofina, an IT entrepreneur and co-founder and director of IT company Addeesoft.

The exhibition was sponsored by the governments of Poland and Japan. The events partners were Donetsk and Luhansk Oblast State Administrations, Luhansk Regional Development Agency, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Ukraine, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Donetsk Oblast.

Information note:

East-Expo 2017 is a new initiative to support small- and medium-sized businesses in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, and to expand knowledge about entrepreneurship, which is being implemented by the United Nations Development Programme in Ukraine with financial support from the governments of Japan and Poland.
